Are Our Characters Really Human?

As authors we have characters that do amazing things, we have characters that don’t do anything all. We have characters that are total fluff and mean nothing to the plot and are forgotten within 5 pages.

But these characters that we create, are they really human?

Do your characters use the bathroom ever?

Do your characters eat three meals a day?

Do your characters shower daily or weekly or ever?

Do your characters go by a normal week?

Do you keep track of day of the week for extra detail?

Do your characters change clothes every day?

There are so many things that are so small of a detail, but at the same time they seem so big. If I was to include the shower every morning that my character had would people get annoyed? If I told you the outfit each day that the character changed into would you care? Do you think it’s weird that my characters are on a journey and I haven’t mentioned once how they are bathing or using the bathroom?

Of course, yes if you’re characters are human then they do these things, but is it necessary to include alllll of these details? I guess not.

The Purgatory Press/ After The End BOOK REVIEW

The Purgatory Press/ After The End  by John Culbert

4 out 5 rating

Vanished poets, overlooked artists, hapless visionaries: The Purgatory Press opens a tantalizing window on a publisher’s catalogue of improbable books. Dark, comical, and startlingly inventive, After the End is a dazzling display of postmodern storytelling. These short fictions showcase the many talents of an emerging author.

Through The Portal BOOK REVIEW

Through The Portal by Justin Dennis

3 1/2 out of 5 read rating

BOOK SUMMARY

When Jem and Oliver accidentally fall through a portal to another world just before their first year of high school, they quickly discover that all is not well here. The first person they meet, a creepy old man named Atychis, almost gets them killed by a ferocious, fire-breathing dragon. They’re only narrowly saved when Sierra, a shy farm girl from a nearby town, uses illegal magic to help them escape. Allowed to stay with her family while they try to figure out a way back home, Jem and Oliver begin to learn of magic and the Regime that is oppressing it.

It isn’t until the Regime kills a woman that the three kids realize they have to do something to stop the Regime from taking over completely. After being framed for a crime they didn’t commit and banished from the town, Jem, Oliver, and Sierra take off on an adventure across this strange world in an attempt to defeat the Regime. New creatures and new kinds of magic are around every corner, but so are dangers that could have them wishing they were back safe at home.

Through the Portal is approximately 104,000 words and is the first in a trilogy.

One of the unique characteristics within Through the Portal is the use of sylph, a physical manifestation of magic that allows the user to manipulate it however they need while exerting minimal energy. Sylph makes transportation available through sylphcycles and sylphquads, and is just one of the exciting new concepts explored in this magical and complex world.

“I AM AN AUTHOR” TEE http://www.elliegracenation.weebly.com

Are You A Writer OR Something Else?

Are you just a writer or are you something else?

I was hanging with some friends and they were explaining to this young kid that I was a writer. The kid happened to be playing with crayons and started to write on a piece of paper. “I’m a writer now too.” he said. They laughed and told him that I write a lot more words than that. So, he started to write all the words that he knew.

I laughed because it was true. He was a writer, but I was something different from JUST a writer. It made me think everyone is a writer. Students writing essays are writers. Even though they hate their entire lives while writing them. Everyone and anyone can be a writer by definition.

But, I’m different, right? Maybe it’s my human way of wanting to feel special or unique or whatever, but I must have another title that’s more appropriate.

Again I was talking to this girl, who has written a book and hasn’t published it yet. She’s like I’m trying to be an author, but I have yet to publish the book that I have written. Then, she quickly corrected herself and said, Yes! I am an author!

An author is a composer of a literary work. So, yes, she is an author and I am an author whether I have published or not.

I feel that a lot of people think they have to be published to be an author or have written something extremely long. You are an author with your story that’s 10 pages. You are an author if you’ve written 230 pages and you hate all of them.

Does book sales or publishing make you a proper author? I have no idea how I feel about that, but I think that as authors we should celebrate every accomplishment we make. Writing is hard for some and easy for others. So, you finally finished 100 pages that’s a celebration. You’ve finished your first book. It’s a celebration. You’ve figured out your characters and plot and the ending, it’s a celebration.

Celebrate being an author.

Celebrate by getting yourself an “I AM AN AUTHOR” tee at my website
