Through The Portal BOOK REVIEW

Through The Portal by Justin Dennis

3 1/2 out of 5 read rating

BOOK SUMMARY

When Jem and Oliver accidentally fall through a portal to another world just before their first year of high school, they quickly discover that all is not well here. The first person they meet, a creepy old man named Atychis, almost gets them killed by a ferocious, fire-breathing dragon. They’re only narrowly saved when Sierra, a shy farm girl from a nearby town, uses illegal magic to help them escape. Allowed to stay with her family while they try to figure out a way back home, Jem and Oliver begin to learn of magic and the Regime that is oppressing it.

It isn’t until the Regime kills a woman that the three kids realize they have to do something to stop the Regime from taking over completely. After being framed for a crime they didn’t commit and banished from the town, Jem, Oliver, and Sierra take off on an adventure across this strange world in an attempt to defeat the Regime. New creatures and new kinds of magic are around every corner, but so are dangers that could have them wishing they were back safe at home.

Through the Portal is approximately 104,000 words and is the first in a trilogy.

One of the unique characteristics within Through the Portal is the use of sylph, a physical manifestation of magic that allows the user to manipulate it however they need while exerting minimal energy. Sylph makes transportation available through sylphcycles and sylphquads, and is just one of the exciting new concepts explored in this magical and complex world.

Are You A Writer OR Something Else?

Are you just a writer or are you something else?

I was hanging with some friends and they were explaining to this young kid that I was a writer. The kid happened to be playing with crayons and started to write on a piece of paper. “I’m a writer now too.” he said. They laughed and told him that I write a lot more words than that. So, he started to write all the words that he knew.

I laughed because it was true. He was a writer, but I was something different from JUST a writer. It made me think everyone is a writer. Students writing essays are writers. Even though they hate their entire lives while writing them. Everyone and anyone can be a writer by definition.

But, I’m different, right? Maybe it’s my human way of wanting to feel special or unique or whatever, but I must have another title that’s more appropriate.

Again I was talking to this girl, who has written a book and hasn’t published it yet. She’s like I’m trying to be an author, but I have yet to publish the book that I have written. Then, she quickly corrected herself and said, Yes! I am an author!

An author is a composer of a literary work. So, yes, she is an author and I am an author whether I have published or not.

I feel that a lot of people think they have to be published to be an author or have written something extremely long. You are an author with your story that’s 10 pages. You are an author if you’ve written 230 pages and you hate all of them.

Does book sales or publishing make you a proper author? I have no idea how I feel about that, but I think that as authors we should celebrate every accomplishment we make. Writing is hard for some and easy for others. So, you finally finished 100 pages that’s a celebration. You’ve finished your first book. It’s a celebration. You’ve figured out your characters and plot and the ending, it’s a celebration.

Celebrate being an author.

Celebrate by getting yourself an “I AM AN AUTHOR” tee at my website

Meeting the pilgrims #dailyprompt #6

Prompt: You are an Indian meeting the pilgrims

I always think about this because today when you’re going to meet someone for the first time you can look them up on the internet and they probably are up there on some site. But the indians had no warnings that people were going to come over and visit. Being an Indian I would have been scared and I probably would have thought that maybe this was a bad omen. I might also have thought that these people were just different kinds of people because they look just like us, but don’t have the same skin or talk like us. There is a way that animals act and there is a way that humans act and it is very different. I think by the way they acted when they first came I would be scared with their guns and weapons. I would try to be polite because I feel that Indians are polite people.

Daily Writing Prompt No. 1

Prompt: You can speak to fish.

The main character is a guy who is a lifeguard for a beach. He is a typical surfer guy with sun died blonde hair, perfect tan, and muscles.

He wakes up one morning in the lifeguard shack as he always does. He is half awake stumbling around getting dressed and fixing something to eat. Then, he comes to his fish tank where he feeds his fish. Then, the fish starts to talk, “I hate these stupid dry flakes you give me.” The fish has an attitude, if you hadn’t noticed. The lifeguard can hear the fish and he’s looking around like did you just speak to me? The fish can’t believe that the guy can understand him. The fish is just like, “This guy is going crazy.” The guy starts having a conversation with the fish asking how this happened and how can he understand the fish. The lifeguard is freaking out trying to pinch himself and sticks his hand in the grease of the bacon that he was making for breakfast when he realizes that this is real. As he is trying to figure out what’s happening there’s a siren about a shark being in the water. He goes out to search and make sure the water is clear. When he gets out in the water he and the shark start having a conversation, but the people in the shore think that he is being attacked. His lifeguard buddy comes jumping into the water to get him out. The guy starts getting really angry because he was in the middle of a conversation and his buddy is confused because he thinks he saw his friend trying to talk to the shark. The guy tells his buddy to leave him alone. The guy goes back to his shack where he and his fish start talking and because he’s breakfast is ruined and his buddy is here he decides to take the fish in a cup with him to a diner on the boardwalk. He is trying to talk to the fish while people stare at him to figure out why he can talk to fish and why he can talk to them now.

Now Playing: Moh Sohrabi

It’s been forever since I’ve done a Now Playing because I didn’t want to write about music that I didn’t fully love. This morning I was on the hunt for good music and I came up being blown away by this guy named Moh Sohrabi. I’m completely blown away that I don’t even know where to start. To the beginning, I guess?

Moh Sohrabi is a young guy from Northern Virginia. He’s basically from my backyard. When I say that I mean that he’s from the same city that I live in and I believe he attends one of my high schools rivals. So, I’m definitely supporting a hometown artist today.

As a reviewer I’ve heard a lot of music and comparing upcoming artist to famous artist comes natural. The only person I could really compare him to is Mac Miller because of the way he flows with his lyrics and his voice which are two things that caught my attention from the start.

Sohrabi raps to the hottest radio hits and he makes them his own. I took the time to listen all of the tracks he had on his ReverbNation page. First, I listened to him rap some well know rap beats like Aston Martin Music, Fireman, and Who Dat. Then, he took Ke$ha’s Tik Tok beat and rap to that. It’s cool that he can rap to anything, but it’s even better that he can make it flow.

There’s the beat, the flow and of course the lyrics. The lyrics to his songs have edge, fire, and feelings. Sometimes when I listen to artist I listen to the first song on their track list and It’s the most amazing song they have and as I go down I feel less impressed. With Moh Sohrabi, I get more and more impressed by how he uses his words. He also uses another language for time to time. This guy has passion and being passionate is the best because the words carry more meaning. ‘Dope Shit’ was just as it says in the title. It was Dope Shit. I can’t pick a favorite. I can’t recommend listening to just one song. I recommend listening to at least the first 5 songs. Then, I know you’ll be hooked.

I could use more of my words to express how great of a rapper this artist is, but I don’t think you’ll be able to grasp the full awesomeness that is Moh Sohrabi. If he made a mixtape, I’d buy three copies and tell my friends to buy it. I’d even get my family to buy it. Seriously. So, stop reading this, open a new tab or whatever, and check this guy out!

Progress

There’s a lot of new things going on. I’m trying new things and moving on and growing from where I used to be with my writing.  I now have a sports blog and I also plan to open my own website. I’m working on two new books and going to have one edited shortly. Being a writing and doing everything on my own without a coach is a challenge, but I’m willing to work for my success. Working towards being success and having to struggle at first is going to make success that much better. Progress and forward motion. Looking at what I did before and try every time to make things better than they were before. Tomorrow starts my regular blogging. I mean it this time.

But for the rest of today I’ll send it with my mother.

Happy Mother’s Day (:

Be A Character

So many times when I tell people that I am writer and that I write books they’ll say you should make me a character in your next book. At first I laughed at this, but as the number of people who said this grew and the amount of people that kept repeating that they wanted to be a character in my book didn’t stop. I started to get a little annoyed. I don’t think annoyed is the right word, but it fits. I’m fine with people that joke about being in my book, but for those people that think I should seriously put them in a book I always ask why?  Why are you such a special person that a character should be based off of you? I don’t mean this in a mean way, but many of these people are very basic people. They live and breathe and they don’t do anything really worth a story. Everyone says that people like to read stories they can relate to. I am sure a lot of people could relate to these normal people, but in my writing I don’t like to be normal. I love a good twist and excitement. I have meet plenty of interesting people that have made their way into my stories. I love putting people I have met into my stories, I love that, but there has to be a reason why someone would want to read about you. I feel so mean because I am telling people that no one wants to read about their lives. I love you normal people, but I can’t write about you. But if you’ve got a unique personality, you’re a totally interesting person, you want a story written about you or have a story that could be inspiring I’d love to write it. kill my twitter with tweets. @egpubs. I am always writing. It takes me like a week to write a novel size book. I could do a little ghost writing.

Anyways, enjoy your weekend, if you’re in NOVA or DC it’s DC’s fashion week! It’s coming to an enddd!

Now Playing: TkO

Today my music review takes us into the world of Electronic flash Dance with a little House splashed with Dub. As of late there has been a lot of artist, such as Britney Spears and The Black Eyed Peas, that are using more electronic or dance type feel to their music. Many people who love mainstream music don’t realize that there’s a whole group and movement with Electronic music. There are people that have been making this music way before Britney Spears. I have a young artist, age 19, recently started in this music genre.  I say recently as in the last 4 or 5 years of his life picked up producing this music. He’s from London, UK and his name is TkO. I received a message to check out his music and I thought sure why not. When I heard “Call The Amb’b’Lance” I instantly started moving my shoulders and saying, “there’s a fire”.  The backbeats are composed very well and the chipped voice is perfectly spaced. After the first time I listened to that song the words were imbedded in my head. I found myself an hour later saying, “There’s a fire, there’s a fire”.  From a song like “A Love Letter For Ms. Rogers” and “I Left My Heart In Durban” you can see how all over the map this guy can be. He isn’t only using Electronic dub beats. He puts a piano, strings, Hip-hop bass, drums, etc. People who make music want to express themselves, but at the same time differ from everything you’ve already heard. TkO expresses himself and differs from most of the music I’ve heard. He’s music shows no boundaries and I like that. There’s a fire starting in my heart and it will start in yours when you check out his music.
